While holding the knife in one hand and the sharpener in another hand move the blade along the surface of the stone with a gentle pressure. For rough sharpening use of seriously damaged knives with a blunt blade use the first and the second slots.The third slot is used for the final stage of sharpening to eliminate burrs on the knife-edge and to provide a smooth, polished edge on the blade.
